Emergency Flood Appeal

On 6 April 2010, torrential rainfall in the Ecuadorian Amazon province of Napo caused the Napo River to overflow leading to the worst flooding in the area in 50 years.

According to official data, 1,288 families were affected. Water levels reached three meters high in the city of Tena causing the death of two people. A hundred and seven homes and 3 bridges were destroyed, including 13 affected neighborhoods and a road was obstructed. The government declared a national state of emergency.

Immediately upon hearing about the flood, SelvaKids launched an emergency appeal and to date we have raised over £1,000 for victims of the flood. Our contacts visited the communities to find out their needs and we have since supplied them the following items bought with the funds raised:

Ongota

-       Spades
-       Machetes
-       Nails
-       Hammers
-       Saws

We supplied enough of these for all of the families in Ongota who have been affected to help with clearing up and rebuilding of their houses. In addition, the school lost all of the computers they had, so we were able to donate a laptop we already had in stock and a printer.

Piwi Chikta community

-       Mattresses
-       Bowls
-       Plates
-       Cups
-       Saucepans
-       Buckets
-       Cooking and kitchen equipment

We supplied enough of these for all of the families in Piwi Chikta who have been affected to help with clearing up and restocking of their houses.

THANK YOU to everyone who has donated to date as well as a huge thanks to our contacts out in Ecuador for making it all possible. It really has made a difference.
